AUTOMATIC TRAFFIC RECORDER COUNTS
Imperial Traffic & Data Collection has completed more than 2,500 Automatic Traffic Recorder counts throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond.
Our ATR services provide reliable roadway volume, vehicle classification, speed, and directional data. We select the collection technology best suited to each roadway, study objective, site condition, schedule, and budget.
Data collection capabilities
-
Directional traffic volumes
-
Lane-by-lane volumes, where required
-
Vehicle classification
-
FHWA Scheme F classification
-
Length-based vehicle classification
-
Speed distribution data
-
Average, median, and 85th-percentile speeds
-
Hourly and 15-minute volume summaries
-
Daily traffic totals and Average Daily Traffic
-
Peak-hour and peak-period volumes
-
Heavy-vehicle percentages
-
Multi-day and extended-duration counts
-
Custom vehicle or micromobility classifications using video
Flexible study durations
ITDC can perform counts for:
-
24 or 48 hours
-
Three, five, or seven consecutive days
-
Fourteen-day studies
-
Thirty-day or other extended monitoring programs
-
Seasonal or repeat-count programs
Equipment selected for each location
Pneumatic tube counters - Best suited for detailed directional volume, speed, and FHWA vehicle-classification studies. Dual-tube configurations can provide axle-based classification and speed-distribution data.
Radar counters - A non-invasive option that can collect volume, length-based classification, and speed data without placing tubes on the roadway surface. Radar may be particularly useful where pavement conditions, traffic volumes, roadway characteristics, or installation limitations make tubes impractical.
Video-based ATR counts - Video collection provides accurate directional and lane-by-lane volumes with the ability to perform premium or customized vehicle classifications. Video is also useful when the footage may support additional analysis after the original count.
How ITDC selects the collection method
-
Study objectives and required data
-
Number of lanes and roadway configuration
-
Traffic speed and volume
-
Pavement and shoulder conditions
-
Installation and field personnel safety
-
Required classification detail
-
Study duration
-
Available budget
-
Need for lane-specific data or retained video
Quality assurance
Each ATR location is reviewed before deployment to confirm the appropriate equipment and placement. During installation, ITDC verifies equipment operation, directionality, recording settings, battery life, and initial count activity. Equipment is inspected during longer deployments, and collected data is reviewed for completeness, lane configuration, directional accuracy, and reasonableness before delivery.
